Starting a Fire from the Top Down

February 5th, 2009

I was doing some research regarding my wood stove and ways to have it burn more efficiently, when I came across another method for starting fires: From the top down. Basically, it’s a pyramid: The small stuff is on top while the bigger stuff is on the bottom. At any rate, it’s apparently an old(er) method of starting fires that dates back to the 1800s. Curiosity has gotten the better of me, and I’m having a go at it right now with my wood burning stove. Boy, if this works, I think I too will be a convert!

I got a little bored today at work and decided to check out orisinal.com, and found this little gem of a game: Sunny Day Sky. My highest score so far was 9800 points.

Spanish Rice Recipe

September 23rd, 2008

I’m not feeling too productive at work today, so I’m writing this recipe in hopes that this distracts me from the brick wall that I’ve hit earlier this morning. At any rate, this recipe is quite simple, and seems to be a favorite among my friends and family.

Here’s what you’ll need for this recipe:

  • 2 Cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 TBSP tomato paste
  • Half an onion chopped
  • 2 to 3 cloves of garlic chopped
  • About 3 Tsp oregano
  • 1.5 Cups of white rice

Mix the tomato paste, oregano, and broth in a medium sauce pan and heat over medium heat. While the broth mixture is heating, place the rice, onion, and garlic in a skillet and lightly saute over medium-high heat. Once the onions are transparent, remove the skillet from the heat, and add the rice mixture to the broth and simmer for about 15 minutes.
