A Weekend Outdoors

October 5th, 2008

This past weekend, a friend of mine and I decided to go camping up at Tohickon Valley Park. It’s a small county park that sits right next to Ralph Stover State Park (also known as High Rocks) that offers scenic views, rock faces for climbing, and about 6 miles of mountain biking trails. We managed to get out twice on Saturday, and once this morning. I did fairly well on the first trip, but not so much on the other two trips; I guess my legs were just a little bit tired.

My new tent (a Marmot Nyx 2p) worked out fabulously despite my ability to find a set my tent up over a rock despite making sure that there were not rocks in the general vacinity. Because of the small size of the tent, I was kept nice and warm the past two tents because the fly did a fantastic job of keeping heat in, and moisture out.

Along with the new tent working well, my mess kit and pack stove turned out to be a very wise investment: We used them pretty hard with making breakfast, coffee, soup, and boiling water to clean all of the dishes.

All in all, it was an excellent weekend that served as a last hurrah of mountain biking before the onslaught of early sunsets and cold weather sets in.

Odd Day

September 24th, 2008

I was dreading this meeting I had scheduled this morning to go over this piece of software we had purchased and slightly modified for use within our new intranet stite. Much to my chagrin, it was canceled, then it was back on, then thanks to my coworker said that we didn’t really need a meeting, so it’s been rescheduled for a later time. Thank God for that! Our department then decided to have a meeting to go over a couple of things, but that got pushed back when someone else had the that room scheduled until later this afternoon.

Now I’m sitting at my desk, staring out my window, trying to find motivation to get back to work; it’s not going so well. A coworker gave me two coupons for Easter Mountain Sports (http://www.ems.com), and I’ve been contemplating on how I should use them: I’m thinking a camp stove, and a mess kit — essential items for hiking and camping. I have a decent tent, and I’ll need to get a pack at some point,  but REI is having a sale sometime in October, and they have a larger selection of packs.
